Églomisé combines engraving on glass with gilding: the pattern is covered with gold leaf, silver or imitation leaf.
Where the name comes from
It is named after the French engraver Jean-Baptiste Glomy, who decorated picture frames with gilded glass. The technique dates back to Byzantium and Ancient Rome and flourished in 19th-century palace interiors.
