There are three ways to make custom stained glass cheaper: use fewer pieces without changing the design much, replace some of the expensive glass with glass from another manufacturer, or choose film stained glass instead of Tiffany. The price is made up of the technique, the number of pieces per square metre, the glass, the sketch and template, the frame and installation, so it is best to tell the workshop your budget before the sketch.
Key points
- The price is calculated by the number of pieces per square metre: the more and smaller the pieces, the higher the cost.
- The number of elements can be reduced without changing the design much; this is discussed at the sketch stage.
- Spectrum glass (USA) costs more than XIANGNAN glass (China); replacing a couple of glasses with a more affordable option lowers the price.
- Film stained glass is more affordable than Tiffany: the films cost much less than stained glass.
- The final quote is made only after every detail is agreed.
What makes up the price of stained glass?
The price of stained glass is made up of five parts: the technique, the number of pieces, the glass, the sketch and template, and installation. Dim Skla is a stained glass and glass workshop in Odesa, Ukraine: an art studio and a glass production facility, and it prices each of these parts. A detailed breakdown is in our article on the price of custom Tiffany stained glass.
| Price component | How it affects the price | Can you save on it? |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Tiffany differs significantly in price from film stained glass | Yes, choose film stained glass |
| Number of pieces | Counted per square metre: more pieces, higher price | Yes, simplify the design without losing the idea |
| Glass | Depends on the manufacturer and quality | Yes, replace some of the glass |
| Sketch and template | The artist draws a sketch and a full-size cardboard template | No, it is the basis of the panel |
| Frame and installation | Fixing structure and installation | Discussed for the installation site |
It is not worth saving on the sketch and template: the full-size template shows how the piece will look at its real size, and it is the easiest place to look for ways to reduce the cost.
How to use fewer pieces without spoiling the design?
The most noticeable way to lower the price of Tiffany stained glass is to use fewer pieces without changing the design much. The more pieces and the more complex the design, the smaller the pieces and the more work for the craftsmen: each piece is cut from glass by hand, ground, wrapped in copper foil and soldered.
It is best to simplify the design together with the artist at the sketch stage, so that the number of elements goes down without changing the design much.
Fewer pieces save time as well as money: the more pieces and the smaller they are, the longer the panel takes to make. We explain how long Tiffany stained glass takes in a separate article.
How to save on glass?
Stained glass differs in price depending on the country of manufacture and quality. For example, Spectrum glass (USA) costs more than XIANGNAN glass (China). If price matters to you, replacing a couple of glasses with a more affordable option helps you get a panel within budget.
The workshop uses glass from European and American manufacturers and glass of its own production, made in a fusing kiln. The glass is selected after the sketch is approved, and that is when you decide with the craftsman which glasses to replace.
When is film stained glass the better deal?
Film stained glass is the better deal when the budget is limited but you want the look of stained glass: the films cost much less than stained glass, and the work is done on a single sheet. Hand-produced Decra Led and Regalead films and lead strips that imitate Tiffany soldering are applied to a sheet of glass.
Film stained glass has its own advantages too: it is fade-resistant, and the film holds the fragments if the glass breaks. Its price depends on the complexity and density of the design, the amount of film and the type of lead strip, so here too a simpler design lowers the cost. We explain how Tiffany differs from film stained glass in a separate article.
What not to do to save money?
Save on what is least visible in the finished panel, not on what holds it together. Three rules:
- Do not cut the design without the artist. The number of elements is reduced so that the design does not change much.
- Do not expect a final price before everything is agreed. The final quote is made after every detail and every factor affecting the cost is agreed.
- Do not keep your budget to yourself. If the budget is limited, tell the workshop: together you can reduce the number of elements or replace some of the glass.
How to tell the workshop your budget?
Name your budget at the first discussion, together with exact details of the piece: they help price it accurately and speed up the order. Prepare:
- the size of the piece, for example the area of a ceiling or window;
- the shape: round, square, rectangular, domed;
- the style: classic, Japanese, Art Nouveau or another;
- the design or examples you like.
Then the work goes in order: discussing the task, sketches, sketch approval, choosing the glass, cost estimate, advance payment (usually 50–70 % of the order value), production and acceptance. If you are still choosing a technique, see the stained glass techniques ordered in Odesa.
FAQ
How much cheaper can stained glass be made?
There is no exact figure: it depends on the design, the technique and the glass. The saving is calculated after the sketch and glass selection, when it is clear how many pieces can be removed and which glasses replaced.
Will the panel look worse if the glass is replaced?
The cost of glass depends not only on the country of manufacture but also on quality. That is why only a couple of glasses are replaced, not all of them, and the replacement is chosen together with the craftsman.
Which is cheaper: Tiffany or film stained glass?
Film stained glass is cheaper: the films cost much less than stained glass. Tiffany differs significantly in price from film stained glass.
Can the price be reduced after the sketch is approved?
The number of pieces is best changed at the sketch stage. After the sketch is approved, some of the glass can still be replaced during selection, before the cost estimate is made.
Does installation affect the price?
Yes. The price includes the frame or fixing structure and the installation work; the fixing method is chosen to suit the interior.
